Firefox Previewed for Honeycomb Tablets

If you’re looking for a great browsing experience on your Honeycomb tablet, you might need look no further than the upcoming release of Firefox. Taking advantage of the larger, widescreen display of Android 3.0 slates, the mobile browser has been designed to reconfigure its layout depending on orientation. Landscape mode provides tabbed browsing via a menu, while portrait mode produces thumbnail previews of tabs along the side of the screen. You can also look forward to a revamped “awesomebar.”

The new browser is still early in its development so there is no given timeframe for when it could be released. We’ll be waiting anxiously, however, as this browser looks to deliver in ways that its smartphone cousin has managed to fall a bit short.

For the TouchPad Hungry, HP to Produce One More Run

Who would have known that discontinuing a product would be just the ticket to spur on stock-clearing sales? Well, HP experienced the phenomenon first hand after announcing they would cease production of hardware related to webOS, dropping the price of platform’s first tablet to just $99. Due to unprecedented demand, HP has decided to produce one final run of TouchPad’s to fulfill the desires of the tablet hungry. While the manufacturer can’t comment on exactly how many more will be produced, it says they will become available in the next few weeks.

Samsung Sells One Galaxy S2 Every 1.5 Seconds, 5 Million After 85 Days

Samsung just hooked us up with their press kit at the Galaxy S2 launch even in NYC and in it was a rather interesting infographic claiming the company sells a Galaxy S device every 1.5 seconds. Wow.

It first launched on April 29th and the mathetmatical comparisons of sales figures to Mt. Everest, Soccer Fields, Elephants and Father Time aren’t only interesting, but pretty mind blowing. With the US set to pump out Galaxy S devices courtesy of T-Mobile and Sprint, I’m wondering what comparison would come next?

Official: T-Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy S II Is Announced

We’ve just received a press release from T-Mobile announcing their upcoming Samsung Galaxy S II. Details were vague with a release date of “this fall” and no official name for the device (possibly just Galaxy S II?). There’s was definitely no mention of the “Hercules” moniker we’ve known as the device for months now. Details we can confirm are a monster sized 4.5-inch SAMOLED Plus display, 1.2 Ghz Exynos processor, 8MP camera with 1080p video recording, 2MP front facing camera 16GB of internal storage and support for T-Mobile’s 4G network, although we still don’t know if this device will be taking advantage of T-Mobile’s faster 42Mbps HSPA+ data speeds when it’s released.
So there you have it. Other than a bigger screen and slightly modified curvier design, this is pretty much the standard Galaxy S II fare that most of us have been waiting 6 months for. A few things are still left up in the air but providing there are no extra surprises, is this Galaxy S II finally worth the wait?
T-Mobile Statement: Galaxy S II (Aug. 30)
T-Mobile USA, Inc. is pleased to announce the upcoming availability of the Samsung Galaxy S™ II at        T-Mobile this fall. Featuring a brilliant 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus touch screen - one of the largest screens available on a Galaxy S II device - T-Mobile’s Galaxy S II promises to keep customers entertained and connected while on the go. We look forward to sharing more information in the coming weeks.

FEMA Releases Android App Just in Time for Hurricane Irene

FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has released an Android app just in time for hurricane Irene to work its way up the East Coast. The app has a bunch of useful information on disaster safety tips, planning emergency meeting locations, creating a supplies kit, and getting the latest news on upcoming disasters. This includes everything from hurricanes, floods, tornadoes, and extreme heat situations. I found the map section to be pretty useless and buggy (sometimes it wouldn’t even load), but there is a ton of other information in the app that could be quite useful. To check it out, you can grab the app here from our handy apps database. Screenshots from the app can be seen after the break.

BlackBerry Playbook will have native email in September

BlackBerry PlayBook is a great tablet, seven-inch, light, with a large screen, a camera capable of recording videos in high definition, a good interface … but it lacks two important things: more applications and native mail client. That is, half as ridiculous as a company specializing in managing BlackBerry email client does not integrate in their first tablet, but that is the fault of BlackBerry Internet Service, which is designed to integrate into BBOS, not QNX, the system operation of this tablet.
RIM promised a major update for BlackBerry PlayBook that consists of two main parts. The premier is that applications reach the Android emulator, so that developers can create Android applications and run on playbook, if downloaded from the app store for BlackBerry. But the second part of this update is finally a native client integrates email, BlackBerry Messenger, calendar, notes and calendar. Date to update? “Soon.”
It seems that this update is about to fall, according to Bloomberg would come next month in September. It also says that a next update, keep your applications updated versions just download delta, i.e. you can download the files that have changed their applications, saving and downloading the entire application.
According to figures from RIM have been delivered to operators and stores up to 500,000 units, numbers far from sales of iPad, the tablet that every company dreams of winning, but it is one of the problems of launching BlackBerry PlayBook with a lack of applications as important, if not talk about putting it on sale “through professional channels” as the channel freelancers and companies of the operators.

Pros
Almost an exact duplicate of Minecraft for PC in God Mode!37 Different buildable blocks!Local Multiplayer through Wi-Fi!Incredible three dimensional graphics with expansive worlds and a dynamic game engine!Create anything you want and destroy anything you don’t, this world’s destiny is controlled by your imagination! You can play this game for hours and it will never grow old!
Cons
No online multiplayer. No TNT or crafting system. No survivor mode.Pretty expensive game, but I personally think it is well worth it.
Minecraft Pocket Edition is the Android version of the popular PC title. In Minecraft Pocket Edition you are able to construct an entire world out of various elements, stones, and other materials. Minecraft Pocket Edition is kind of like a virtual Lego world filled with infinite possibilities in which you are the person who holds all of the Lego pieces. It also features local multiplayer over Wi-Fi, the ability to create newly randomized worlds, and the majority of the building materials from the PC version.
The object of Minecraft is to customize a world to be whatever your heart desires. If you were to do a YouTube search for Minecraft you would see videos of epic mansions, flaming dragons, and full size castles all created by normal human beings like you an me. This is done by the unique Minecraft world “editing” system.  Minecraft randomly generates worlds for you to customize and remake however you please. You are able to create as many separate worlds as you please.
All of the components of the world are building blocks that end up composing the world as a whole such as concrete, sand, sedimentary rock, dirt, grass, wood, leaves, glass, brick, etc. Your role in the game is to place these building blocks as you please throughout the world and to delete or destroy blocks at your will in order to create the world you envision.
The way this plays out is that you are put in the shoes of a miner who is placed all alone on a large island. You are able to dig as deep as the core of the earth and to build as high in to the sky as the ozone layer and all you need to do is place blocks to create structures and destroy blocks to hollow out spaces or to dig in to the earth. This allows you to hollow out mountains and create vast tunnel systems and homes in the mountainside. It also allows you to create tall castles and red brick homes all throughout the island. You can even make the Island one giant mountain and then build a vast city inside of it. This is power and the appeal of Minecraft.
There are currently 36 different kinds of blocks; these include wood, concrete, dirt, sand, cobblestone, glass, trees, torches, and many others. Castles tend to be easier to create with concrete and cobblestone ends up being extremely important for roads. Torches are a must as they allow you to see in dark areas. In Minecraft the lighting is extremely realistic and if you are inside of a building without torches you will be unable to see anything. By placing torches you are able to light up any room, tunnel, or dark corner in the game.
Unfortunately, Minecraft Pocket Edition does not have all of the blocks from the original PC version of the game. Pocket Edition does not have TNT or any of the nether materials from the original game. Instead it only has the basic building blocks from the original. It also does not support weapon and element crafting like in the PC version. These omissions are because the game is still in Alpha for Android and the developer plans on including them in future versions of the game.
The game also supports play over Wi-Fi allowing you to customize your world with the help of your friends. You are able to create a local network game and open it up for other players to join. Sadly this only supports local area networks and does not support Internet multiplayer within infrastructure mode or 3G.
Finally, there is currently only one mode of play which is construction mode or God mode. This allows you to construct a world at your whim. There is no health bar, no enemies, and no possibility of dying because you jumped too far down or swam too deep in the ocean. In the PC version there is a survivor mode where you must face zombies, monsters, death by drowning, and death by falling. Survivor mode also allows you to craft weapons and traps to kill off the bad guys and protect your structures. Although this is currently not supported in Pocket Edition the developer has stated that he plans on adding it in the future.
Minecraft Pocket Edition is extremely fun to play. The worlds are vast and allow you to create and change anything about them at your whim. I was able to construct a massive castle, an underground lair, an indoor pool, and a floating home within a few hours in the game and I had barely touched the full area of the world I was in.
This game provides the player with unlimited creativity and unlimited worlds in which to express that creativity in. I would recommend this to anyone who has ever enjoyed playing with Lego’s or likes to construct things. It will allow you to fully express yourself in a virtual world where your potential is only limited by your imagination.
Minecraft Pocket Edition is extremely addictive. I have been playing it daily since I purchased it and I do not see an end in sight for myself and this game. There is unlimited potential for your creativity in this masterpiece and the graphics are excellent for such an immense world on a mobile platform. In fact I would go as far as to say that the graphics had no loss in quality from the PC version to the Pocket Version.
The only thing that I think really hampers the addictiveness of this game is the lack of survivor mode. I can see in the future how I will become bored of this game, because I will see no point in creating new structures if there is no threat of those structures being knocked down and no reward for me creating them. The addition of a survivor mode would add a more personal challenge to the game and further increase my gameplay.
The graphics for Minecraft are excellent. The game has virtually identical graphics to the PC version and the gameplay is extremely smooth. There was no visible lag while playing the game unless a background application began syncing large amounts of data, like Astrid Task/Todo List or Titanium Media Sync. This was obviously not a result of the game engine, but was caused by the large amount of memory required in order to sync these applications.
Minecraft Pocket Edition made no use of either the accelerometer or the phone’s haptic feedback. It did utilize sound effects but only for basic actions like: creating and destroying blocks,  swimming, moving, and selecting menu items. This game would benefit greatly from a music track like in the PC version and hopefully this will be added in future versions of the application.
One thing I would like to touch on in this section is the games controls on an Xperia Play controller. Currently the game has no options to customize the game controls and your movement is controlled by the D-PAD, your cursor movement is controlled from the right analog stick, block control is the back two triggers, and block selection is handled through the X, O, Square, and Triangle keys. One option that I think should be made available for the game is movement by the left analog stick. The controls currently feel too spread out, and I think that it would be easier if the controls were consolidated to the two touch pads included on the Xperia Play.

New Pics of the HTC Vigor Surfacing

Long have any concrete details eluded us of the HTC Vigor. Many a rumor has risen, only to keep us interested, yet never providing us with any hard facts.
Well, the latest leak is no different. We get some (beautiful) pics of HTC’s latest device, but nothing verifying our sources claims of a 4.3” screen, 1GB RAM, 1.5GHz CPU, or the Beats by Dre software. We know that the device is bluetooth-certified, so it HAS To be nearing a release, we just wish that HTC would be more forthcoming with the specs and expected release date.
Oddly enough, these pics remind this author of the Incredible HD, while the coloring hints at Verizon’s DROID offering. Could the two really be one device, destined for the Verizon network? We’ll definitely let you know if you we hear anything different.

Amazon Free App Of The Day – Photo Enhance Pro

If it’s one thing that most Android devices need a little help with, it’s in the camera department. That’s why I wanted to let you guys know about Amazon’s free paid app of the day, Photo Enhance Pro. This photo editing app allows you to enhance and tweak your photos by boosting colors, increasing detail, even applying an HDR effect and exports your photos in full resolution. I was surprised at how this was definitely one of the more user friendly photo editing apps I’ve come across.
Normally the app is $5 in the Android Market but you can download it for FREE in the Amazon Appstore.

T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint’s Galaxy S II Variants Pose for a Picture

Thanks to Pocket Now we’ve got a nice group shot of the upcoming Galaxy S II U.S. variants. Out of the three, I’m still digging the Nexus S style of T-Mobile’s version, but I’ll be sure to check out all of them equally once they hit the shelves. We should be fully introduced to this threesome this Tuesday at Samsung’s reveal event in NYC. Though Verizon isn’t supposed to get an S II model, there have been rumors there will be a device close in specs coming. This could very well be the LTE Galaxy device we mentioned. More surprises could be in store for Tuesday, so stay tuned.

Nexus Prime passes WiFi certification

We’re pretty excited here at TA because we likely have a bit of Nexus Prime news on our hands. The Samsung GT-I9250 has just passed WiFi certification today. If the info on a recently leaked Samsung roadmap holds any truths, this is 99.9% the Nexus Prime. It’s coming people, we’re close. If you’ve been out of the Android loop recently, the new Nexus will have a Super AMOLED 1280×720 HD screen, feature Ice Cream Sandwich, and some sort of TI OMAP4 processor rumored to be a 1.5Ghz dual core. This will be the Android to own. Being a Verizon customer, I’ve been denied a Nexus One and Nexus S, but my hopes are high this time.

Android Developers Spamming Their Apps in the Market [Rants]

Whether you’re an Android user or a developer, I’m sure we can all agree on 1 thing: the Android Market is far from perfect. I’m not talking about the UI or even how “open” it is (another topic for another time), I’m talking about things like this.
CatNinjaFly. Or is it SuperNinjaCat? Or NinjaCatFly? It doesn’t matter what you call it because all would be the correct answer and that’s my problem. They are all the exact same games, from the exact same developer. Apparently, the developer NANJAANDROID thought he could gain a little more exposure out of his app, by spamming it in the Market under different names.
Did I download the game? Yes. Did I enjoy it? I mean – it’s a freakin’ ninja cat for heaven’s sake. But that’s beside the point. The point is, how does stuff like this go unnoticed in our Android Market and what should be done about it? I don’t want to down rate the game because it’s actually quite enjoyable. Honestly, I’m not sure what can be done about “app spam” like this but I can tell you this, it needs to stop. NOW.

Samsung Mobile USA shows off the Galaxy S II’s e-mail app with a video on YouTube. In the video, you’ll get a peek at the S II’s e-mail system in landscape mode showing off a computer or tablet type of experience. For someone who’s inbox gets slammed daily, this looks like a really handy e-mail view to see everything at once, outlook style. I’m not sure if this would pull me away from using the Gmail app itself, but Id be willing to at least give it a shot and see how it works.
How much more can we be teased before Samsung’s big NYC event Tuesday? I’m not going to lie, I’ve been completely sucked in by the Galaxy S II hype and I cannot wait to get my hands on one. Are you dying to get your hands on one as well? Hit the break for the video and another slide like the one above.

Gamescom 2011 Rumor – HTC Evo 4G getting OnLive for smartphones first

While not officially confirmed, OnLive dropped strong hints today that its streaming game service is likely to make its debut on smartphones at some point in the future. The first handset to receive the device is also unconfirmed but the HTC Evo 4G was mentioned by name during discussions with the firm.
Despite having a 4.3? screen, 4G , and a kickstand for viewing, the Evo 4G may seem like an odd choice – considering other options, such as the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy S II.  However, it does stand to reason that an HTC product may get the coveted first spot, especially in light of HTC’s $40M investment into OnLive back in February 2011.
For those who may not be aware, here’s a description of OnLive from their website:
“OnLive delivers high-end video games from the cloud to your PC, Mac®, TV and even mobile devices at blindingly fast speeds, so you can play the games you want, the second you want them. No discs. No downloads. No fancy hardware. Just you, the Internet and the games you love. “
Cloud gaming at blindingly fast speeds on my Android?  Yeah, you can count me in.

Swype Gestures, Personal Dictionary Management, and Swype Connect come Fresh in New Beta Version of Virtual Keyboard App

Swype has released a new beta version to a select portion of its users for testing before it’s released to the general public. The new version will come with several new features.

Watch on Mobile
Swype Gestures and Personal Dictionary Management are two of the new features being previewed in this beta. Gestures gives users quick access to some of the most common tasks on the phone, such as editing (cut/copy/paste/select all), tweeting and maps (highlight text and send it straight to Twitter/Google Maps/Facebook). Personal Dictionary Management lets users manage the words that they add to their Swype dictionary directly through the settings menu.
Swype Connect, another new features being introduced, allows the company to verify the license of each version of Swype without using a separate installer, and lets it gather statistics about how users interact with the app, so it can continue to improve its accuracy. Swype Connect will bring increased license stability, improved accuracy, and opens the door for additional new features in the future, according to the company.

Samsung Epic Touch 4G Launching on Sprint September 9th?

An unsubstantiated report coming out of SprintFeed claims that Sprint could be among the first of the US carriers to launch the Samsung Galaxy S II. Under the name Epic Touch 4G, we could be seeing the followup to last year’s Epic 4G as early as September 9th. The timing matches up with previous whispers about the launch of the Galaxy S II in the States, but the date remains a rumor for now. All will be revealed (we hope) come August 29th at Samsung’s launch event for its new North American lineup.

First Images of the HTC Vigor Hit the Web

What do you get when you put the HTC Droid Incredible on a strict diet of protein shakes and bench presses? From the looks of it, the HTC Vigor a device rumored to be Verizon’s next big 4G LTE contender. The stylings of the handset are definitely reminiscent of the Incredible and Incredible 2, but the screen appears gargantuan in size with some additional texturing on the battery cover. From the pictures we can gather the phone will carry HTC Sense, a front-facing camera, and a dual-flash setup on the rear.

Rumors we have heard elsewhere have pointed towards an HD 720p display, 1GB of RAM, and a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU. It may also be among the first HTC handsets to make use of the companies recent Beats by Dre acquisition. Rumors are already pointing towards an October 6th release, but you know how counting your chickens before they hatch goes.

AndroSensor an All-in-one Android Sensor Diagnostic Tool

AndroSensor. The absolute all-in-one diagnostic tool! AndroSensor started as a simple showcase of all the sensors your Android device has, yet it has become the absolute all-in-one diagnostic tool that lets you know virtually everything about your device’s status.
Price: Free
Tested on: Sony Xperia Play, HTC Droid Incredible 2
Content Rating: Low Maturity
Pros
Single screen read out of all system sensor information!Minimalistic and extremely easy to use interface!Select only the sensors that you wish to see displayed in the application!Detailed readout of system sensors!Allows you to monitor your device’s multi-touch capabilities!
Cons
Not overly useful information for the average consumer. Not frequently used.
AndroSensor is an Android application for keeping track of all of your device’s sensors. AndroSensor allows you to track your device’s GPS, Accelerometer, Magnetic Field, Orientation, Proximity, Battery Status, and Sound Level. You are also able to keep real-time logs of your device’s operation as well as see detailed info on your Hardware, Memory, Software, Display, and Mobile Network information.
The sensor readouts are based on your device’s current state and change as you change the location, orientation, or the amount of usage of the device. This information allows you to see whether your device is working properly and to be able to accurately compare the sensors on one device to the sensors on another. Readouts based on location are given in Latitude and Longitude, readouts based on device position are given based on the position of the device’s axis, and the battery information provided in AndroSensor is similar to that given in other applications like Battery Indicator.
Under the Device Info option you are able to delve deeper into the specifics of your device’s hardware. This portion of the application gives detailed information on your device’s model, system software, processor, and memory. What I especially appreciated about this portion of the app is that it displays current CPU governors, Available RAM vs Total RAM, and detailed display information including device density and refresh rate. You are also able to access a Multi-touch test which allows you to find out exactly how responsive your device is to multi-touch through determining maximum simultaneous touches supported on your device’s hardware.
AndroSensor also keeps detailed logs of running processes and registry changes on your device. You are able to access these at any time by selecting the Menu key and the selecting Logs. The logs are given in a text based scrolling readout which can be exported to any email address or saved for later perusal.
Finally, the settings allow you to select the language of the application, determine the units used to display system information in, change the application update interval, or choose which sensors are monitored and displayed. I especially like the option to select which sensors should be monitored and displayed because it prevents the application from becoming congested and allows you to see only the information you desire to see for your device.
AndroSensor is a useful application if you wish to see more detailed information on each of your device’s sensors. It gives you extremely detailed information on your GPS, Accelerometer, and Device Display. The application is lightweight and filled with options to give you as much information as you desire.
Despite this fact I do not think it would be overly useful for the common user, showing mostly information which is not necessary for the common user. I personally have no use for a detailed readout on my phone’s accelerometer, GPS, or current decibel level, and I doubt many others would either. I think this is mostly a niche application for developers looking to test the accuracy of their programming on a device.
AndroSensor is extremely easy to use. All you need to do is turn on the application and all of your device’s sensor readouts are displayed instantly in front of you. There are a few menus incorporated throughout it, but everything was very straightforward and easy to use.
Personally I would not add AndroSensor on my daily flyer list. I normally do not have any need for sensor readouts or system information on my phone beyond what I already know. Instead I would put this application in a category that I would download when needed and recommend to others, but not use often myself.
Where I believe it would be used the most is by developers; especially for those developers experimenting custom ROMs and the Android file system.
The interface for AndroSensor is minimalistic and that is  how I like it. The application does an excellent job putting out all of the information you may need and making it easy to access for all users.  The information displayed is detailed and concise, and there are no major distractions to take away from the pleasant user experience.

Rumored Pantech Breakout, Another LTE Phone on Verizon

A recent leak has us wondering about the possibility of a new Verizon device, the Breakout, coming in the following months. While the specs aren’t great – just a 1GHz CPU, 512MB RAM, front and back cameras and Gingerbread – it does support Verizon LTE. Judging by the popularity of LTE and the relative demand for inexpensive smartphones, our guess is that this phone will target the low-budget crowd (maybe even the prepaid crowd). While nothing is confirmed yet, we do have a comparison sheet, which is more than we can say for many other rumors.

Classic Notes Lite Is Simple Yet Rich In Features, Available In The Android Market

Looking for a notepad app on crack?  Yeah, we’ve got you right here.  If you’re a note taking junkie like me, you might want to give this one a go.  Note taking apps are a dime a dozen on the Android Market, but rarely do we see any that come with this many features on board.  Classic Notes Lite for Android comes jam packed with a plethora of goodies from the developer, Fluffy Delusions.  There are so many features for the app, we had a hard time listing them all here.  However, we’re certainly going to do our best.  After all, that’s what page breaks are for, aren’t they?  With that classic notebook feel and look, the application  allows you to take text notes, video notes, voice notes and more.  There’s social network integration as well for those looking to share their notes on Facebook and Twitter.  Want to make notes private?  Well, you can.  So jot down those bank codes without fear.  In addition, you can paint notes, lock’em, export them, add them to your calendars, create shortcuts for your homes screen, set reminders and even Geotag a note.
