Deadly Gunners is one of those superbly beautiful games that looks awesome to play. Full 3D environments, cool robots and enemies, devastating weapons and great explosions all contribute to this incredible app. Just by looking at the video, you can pretty much tell your phone will need to be of pretty decent quality to play it, and there are plenty of comments on the Android Market who are seemingly unable to open the game.
So you fire up the game and you have a couple of options initially. ‘Score Attack’ gives you 5 minutes in a desert level to get as many points as you can, there is a boss at the end to defeat if you can. ‘Extra Play’ oddly, seems to be the main game and you progress through levels as you would expect. The level design is clever, astute and with careful places to hide and shoot from, despite you being a great big robot.
While the weapons themselves are pretty superb, I found the aim control really excellent. It gets around the touchscreen issues where you might have one of your thumbs over the area you want to fire at by including sights that are slightly removed from your thumb’s position, making it easy for you to see what you are aiming at. Very simple idea really, but many shooters fail to incorporate a good firing control. I was also impressed by the AI of the baddies. If you fly into an area and start shooting at random, many seem to move out to the sides and attack you from your flanks, others will start to fly and attack you from the air. Talking of flying your mech comes packed with a small jet pack, so if you need a boost or a big jump (which you will) the jet pack gives you that extra dimension.
What I feel the game lacks is a real sense of atmosphere. As you progress it difficult to know exactly what you are fighting for and the brutish mechs you destroy seem to have very little to them. The game doesn’t seem to have cause. While the explosions, gunfire, canon-fire, the flying, the bosses and the glorious graphics are great; you begin to wonder what the purpose is. While there are so many things to be in awe of in the game, it kind of lacks an edge- and certainly an element of addictiveness, the mindless action is perhaps a little too mindless.

The game is buckets of fun and the action-packed nature of the game play is a real thrill. The controls are pretty easy to get used to, and once you are you’ll have little difficulty despatching several barrels full of hot metal at your enemies.
Perhaps not as addictive as some games, but as you progress, the immersion coaxes you back gently. This can be reduced somewhat by the lack of direction the game seems to have, but for mindless explosions and fun this is a great time killer.
Graphics are about as good as you can get on Android currently. Very smoothly rendered detail, superb explosions within a full and comprehensive 3D environment.
Sound is what you expect from high-calibre mech-style games; pumping industrial music soundtrack and explosions aplenty.
