Concept and Gameplay Design Overall Value
Zombie Runaway, by developer Com2uS, puts an interesting twist on the whole zombie apocalypse thing by completely swapping everyone’s roles: Instead of playing as the lone human left alive against an angry zombie horde, you play the lone (and semi-clueless) zombie left running headlong from murderous humans. It’s an interesting twist that leads to fun (and free) gameplay.
Concept and Gameplay
As mentioned, Zombie Runaway has you playing as a zombie on the lamb, running for his (undead) life from humans looking to presumably make him into gray paste. As your greening character runs, he’ll need to avoid tombstones, obelisks, spike blocks, and stone walls. All of these things detract from a zombie’s health, and can make an escape to freedom rather bothersome.
Zombie Runaway
The basic running mechanic offered in Zombie Runaway is more or less what the app is sporting, minus a few extras. The developers have included the option to purchase extra outfits and items for your zombie, which is pleasant, but doesn’t necessarily liven up the gameplay any. Likewise, the game features two different game modes, both of which can become rather stale rather quick. Arcade mode allows players to advance as far as their lives will take them, while the so-called “Blitz” sets a time limit on how many points the player can earn. Both are great at first, but as there are no unlockable power-ups, or different levels to speak of, the desire to replay the game simply isn’t to be had.
Design
Thankfully, Zombie Runaway looks fantastic, and it’s obvious the developers have spent a great deal of time refining its visual elements. The zombie himself looks cartoony and friendly, and the running physics are top-notch. Controls work splendidly, though I would have preferred a bit more in-app documentation to start things off: The game isn’t complicated, but even a basic pop-up tutorial would have been appreciated. The levels are just as well-designed, however, and the various obstacles were placed perfectly, creating a challenge that was fun, rather than off-putting.
There are local leader boards for each mode, as well as Facebook integration, but I still would have liked to see Open Feint make an appearance. Zombie Runaway also comes with more adverts than one can shake a stick at, which become irritating very quickly.
Overall Value
At the end of the day, Zombie Runaway provides a unique approach to a zombie title that really is quite a lot of fun. I enjoyed the fiercely frantic running action, even if the same gameplay is repeated over and over. The two different game modes supply some amount of variety, and though it’s not quite enough to keep players come back again and again, Zombie Runaway is still a great way to shave off some boring minutes during the early commute. And at no cost to the user, Zombie Runaway is certainly priced right.
Android Apps Review Details: Zombie Runaway app is free. This app requires Android 2.2 and up. You may download Zombie Runaway from the Android Market.
